Definition of combing:

Combing is the process of combing the slivers obtained from the drawing according to the comb and making high-quality slivers by removing the small fibers in the form of noyel. The quality of the fiber is very good if small fibers are removed from the slivers obtained from the drawing frame. Making yarn from this fiber increases the strength of the yarn, makes the yarn more balanced and makes it possible to produce very high quality i.e. light count yarn, by which it is possible to make high-quality fabrics.

In addition to the average length of the fiber, the raw material usually contains a lot of tiny ash, which makes it difficult to make the next process i.e. yarn. Moreover, it is not possible to make very fine yarns with small fibers. Good quality fiber is needed to make good and high-quality yarn. This fiber can be used to make a balanced, clean, smooth, and well-strengthened yarn of average count.

Combing operation is the only process by which the quality of raw material can be improved. Therefore, there is no substitute for the need for combing operation in the spinning line as there is a need for equal length as well as balanced, clean, smooth, and well-strengthened ash for medium and fine yarn preparation. Moreover, in the case of the production of ring frame yarn, it is necessary to give less twist to the yarn to reduce the production cost.

That is, the lower the twist, the higher the yarn production, and the lower the production cost. So good production with a low twist is possible only in the case of combed yarn. It is possible to increase the production by reducing the twist of combed sliver i.e. sliver and roving made of equal length fiber. In addition to increasing production, the strength of the combed yarn is high, the yarn produced is smooth, clean, and balanced. Due to the short length of the cotton fiber staples, there are serious difficulties in making yarn.

Other textile materials do not have this problem. Therefore, to process cotton fiber, it is necessary to remove short fiber by using the comb. In 1848, Joshua Heilemann of France invented the first combing machine for cotton processing. Cotton, waste silk, and flax could be processed by this machine. This combing machine was sometimes called Short piece comber. Nasmith later modernized the combing machine.

1. Rectilinear comber:

In short-staple spinning mills using only rectilinear comber machine. The original design of this combing machine was originally made by Joshua Heilmann in 1845. Later, in 1902, the Englishman Nasmith modernized the design. Since 1948, various companies have developed single-sided combing machines.

2. Circular comber:

The circular comber machine is mainly used in English Worsted Fiber Process.

3. Rotary comber:

 The rotary comber machine is used in the spinning line of Schappe spun yarn production.

4. Hackling machine:

 The hackling machine is used for bust fiber processing.
